Abstract

Cet ouvrage présente une synthèse étendue des idées monétaires en Europe, depuis les premiers écrits de Nicolas Copernic sur la monnaie (1517) jusqu'à la veille de la Richesse des nations d'Adam Smith (1776). Il est animé par quatre objectifs : analyser les idées en regard du contexte historique de leur élaboration ; élargir l'examen de la période à la plupart de l'Europe (France, Angleterre, Italie, Espagne, Portugal, Provinces-Unies, Saint Empire, Suède, Russie et Empire ottoman) ; lire dans leur langue d'origine les écrits consacrés aux problèmes monétaires et financiers ; réévaluer certains discours d'auteurs méconnus ou considérés comme secondaires. Au-delà de la diversité des opinions, c'est la définition d'une " bonne monnaie " qui occupe l'ensemble des auteurs de l'époque.
