Abstract

This article explores the evolution dynamics of Aleppo's "old city" (in Syria) in order to reveal its principal factors and consequences. This work is based on a methodology that focuses on the academic research in economic history and interprets the results of an empirical study. In the first part, we analyze the endogenous factors that supported the economic expansion of Aleppo and the development of its textile activities during the Othman time, and in the second part we examine the multiple transformations that occurred on this urban territory at the XX century. From this analysis, we find out that in spite of the decline observed on several levels, the ancestral activities of the city survive until today thanks to the productive actors and the local socio-culture. As a conclusion, the article questions the territorial synergy and governance in this type of urban space. It interrogates particularly the relation between tourism and the traditional textile activities in addition to the role of patrimonial resources in the dynamics of local development.
