Abstract

Le caractère est une notion communément reconnue comme centrale dans la pensée d'Alfred Marshall, et plus largement dans l'Angleterre victorienne. Pourtant, cette notion n'est jamais intrinsèquement définie. Le présent article propose une reconstruction intellectuelle du caractère chez Marshall qui, sans nier que ses conceptions évoluent entre ses écrits de jeunesse et de maturité, se focalise sur les éléments pérennes de sa pensée. Cette reconstruction est également l'occasion de revenir, par un travail d'archives, sur la conception marshallienne de l'idéal social. Marshall conçoit en effet le caractère comme un complexe de qualités psychologiques, morales et cognitives qui, non sans circularité, prennent sens dans l'idéal marshallien et simultanément le servent.
