Abstract

The resurgence of pawnshops in China is not the mere resurrection of a past rea di/y reviled by the Communist vulgate. lt is the mark of a revival of civil society as much as it is the result of an acceptance by the Chinese government to come to terms with the economic and social reality, and that of a search for solutions to dysfunctions of a bureaucratic financial system. This is why pawnshops offer an image combining tradition and modernity, openness and conservatism, substitution and complementarity, prosperity and poverty ... ln this paper I present the current place and role of pawnshops in China with insights from pawnshops in Shenyang and Shanghai.
