Abstract

This article applies the concept of " intrinsic motivation " developed by K. Thomas (2009) that can explain how executives choose their positions in personnel movements within an organization. An exploratory qualitative research was conducted with senior and junior executives of a French leading bank in order to understand what sort of motivation moves them to change positions. In a new organizational context, characterized by many levels of management and supervisory positions being eliminated, workers have new perceptions and new expectations regarding their careers and intra-organizational mobility. This research shows that the concept of "intrinsic motivation" as developed by K. Thomas, involving (i) Meaningfulness, (ii) Choice, (iii) Competence, and (iv) Progress, provides a useful framework for analyzing employees' reactions to internal mobility issues.
