Abstract

Le système énergétique mondial se trouve confronté à deux contraintes simultanées : l'épuisement des réserves de pétrole, qui risque d'entraîner un nouveau choc pétrolier, et la protection du climat, qui oblige à diminuer les émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Les conséquences réciproques de ces deux phénomènes doivent être soigneusement analysées. Dans le domaine pétrolier, il faut préciser à la fois les perspectives de production par régions et l'impact d'une hausse des prix sur la demande par pays. Dans le domaine climatique, il faut se demander si une baisse de la consommation de pétrole suffirait à diminuer les émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Pour cela, il faut évaluer la place du pétrole, des autres combustibles fossiles, de l'énergie nucléaire et des énergies renouvelables dans un bilan énergétique mondial acceptable à long terme.
