Abstract

Does the professional practice of managers/executives in the public sector, more specifically in the hospital, present distinctive features or does it reflects the universalism of managerial practices? To address this question we will examine who the managers/executives in the hospital are, what their function is, their role, which their means of action are and which the limits are imposed on them, how they define professionalism. Echoing these questions, the French government, aware of the significant role of these actors and of its impact on the implementation of new managerial policy, worry about the contents of the mission which is devoted to them and how their occupational status is recognized. Numerous studies analyzing the role of managers in hospitals have been undertaken these last years (Larcher 2008, De Singly 2009)
