Couleur et race au Brésil. Stratégies individuelles et stratégies collectives

Abstract

Afin de permettre d'appréhender la fluidité des processus de catégorisation au Brésil, l'auteure propose une distinction conceptuelle entre couleur [cor] et race [raça]. La cor n'est plus considérée comme un euphémisme de la raça, mais comme un concept autonome, tout en demeurant polarisée selon un imaginaire raciste. Tandis que la raça impose une fixité des catégories propre à la mise en place de stratégies collectives, la plasticité des identifications selon la cor autorise des stratégies individuelles. Des individus peuvent réaliser une certaine mobilité ascendante, sans ouvrir la voie à d'autres à leur suite. Les stratégies individuelles - et donc une approche en termes du concept de cor - sont privilégiées tant qu'elles sont couronnées de succès.
