Abstract

Les approches théoriques par les instruments de gestion connaissent un renouveau dans différentes disciplines en sciences sociales. Ces approches ont pour point commun de considérer les instruments de gestion comme point d'entrée pour étudier l'action organisée et stratégique à travers les instruments mis en place par les organisations pour conduire cette action. L'article introduit des éléments de cadrage permettant de distinguer la notion d'instrument de gestion de celles d'outil ou de dispositif. Il propose ensuite une généalogie de ces approches pour évaluer l'originalité des développements contemporains sur les instruments par rapport à des travaux plus anciens, en replaçant ces derniers dans les contextes à la fois théoriques et pratiques dans lesquels ils ont émergé. Il se conclut enfin sur l'intérêt d'élargir l'agenda de recherche en sciences de gestion au-delà de la micro-analyse des instruments locaux pour étudier la conception de dispositifs stratégiques multi-niveaux constitués de l'agencement d'acteurs et d'instruments.
