Abstract

Empowerment is one of the United Nations Millennium Goals for women. Limited to access to cash income, it is designed primarily as a way to free themselves from family and social constraints. But there is another side, their dependence to the market and its fluctuations, that is particularly revealed by the importance of female unemployment and by the fact that the increase in their share in employment is largely related to informal and precarious labour. Thus, instead of measuring their degree of empowerment, the participation rate of women is an indicator of their "participation" in the commodification of the economy.
