Abstract

The ISO 26000 standard is the first international standard that may be qualified as fourth type. After a long elaboration process which involved 80 countries and 40 international organizations, it should be published next year. Its precise designation is "guidance on social responsibility". It concerns not only the firms but also the place and the role of any kind of organizations inside the society. It is based on universal principles and imposes a set of core subjects. This article deals with the legitimacy of ISO to address such issues as human rights, labour practices, environment, community involvement and development. Neither ISO structures nor elaboration process offer guarantees that one is supposed to require from a democratic institution.
