Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate the cultural sector (cultural industries and performance arts) in France and in Québec, in order to show how far the various institutionalist economic theories are likely to account for the diversity of the forms of enterprises. My analysis relates more precisely to "social economy" (associations, co-operatives, mutual societies). I use various statistical methods (instrumental variables and "matching" based on propensity score with data from national surveys (INSEE, France & Ministère de la Culture du Québec) ; textual data analysis with data from business and activities reports). I establish three stylized facts with a general validity (relation between involvement and cultural consumption ; specific place of social economy in certain activities ; plurality of the motivations of stakeholders). The various institutionnalisms (rational choice institutionalism, conventionalist institutionalism and historical institutionalism) were then confronted with these facts. I highlight the need for an articulation of these different theoretical frameworks.
