Abstract

This article considers the impact of e-commerce on logistic models. Two models are compared. The first concerns traditional mail-order businesses for which internet is a sales channel among others that has to be interfaced with the logistic chain. The second model is that of young start-ups which concentrate their competencies and innovation know-how on customer relations, and outsource the logistics to specialized firms. For both types of business, the article studies shifts caused by the internet and notes that this new medium puts logistics at the heart of internet users' assessment of the quality of in-home shopping services.
