Le concept de rente: le cas des économies du Moyen-Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord

Abstract

Despite the widespread use of the concept of rent within the literature on the oil countries of MENA, it is a concept lacking a sound theoretical foundation. The theory of the rentier state, considered one of the major contributions of Middle East Studies to Political Sciences, is based on a concept imported from Political Economics. However, economics did not succeed in building a unified theory of rent. When studying the impact of the hydrocarborn exports on such "rentier economies", economists generally mobilize theoretical tools other than rent; the only exception is the theory of rent seeking, which precisely does not relate to natural resources.
