Abstract

The marketing of airport landing slots : a good idea with fatal flaws. – As in the United States, the liberalisation of air transport in Europe has given rise to a major increase in traffic, the main result of which today is the congestion of the major airports. Also in keeping with the United States, the European airline companies have developed a "hubbing", strategy that further exacerbates the scarcity of airport landing slots. Faced with this situation, should we set up in Europe, (as in the four large American airports) a system for the marketing of airport landing slots in order that the market ensures the optimal allocation of these rare resources? The reply is rather negative, for three key reasons. Firstly, in the United State, this marketing has not been the only solution used in order to allocate airport landing slots. Secondly, where marketing has been used, it has tended to reduce competition and increase concentration. Finally, the competitive relationship between companies is not the same in Europe as in the United States. Rather than copying what has been done the other side of the Atlantic, the authors propose the establishment of a licensing system, the main objective of which is to clarify the system for the allocation and management of airport landing slots.----------------------------------------------With the authors and the publisher of the copyright agreement.
