Abstract

As reminded by Piscitelli and Anderson (2001), children, and particularly small children of 4 to 10 years old are largely overlooked by research devoted to the museum experience. When the child comes under study, the scope nearly always is exclusively that of the learning experience, acquired through family or school outings – and in the very specific context, furthermore, of science museums (cf. Blud, 1990; Brown, 1995; Cordier, 1997; Diamond, 1986; Guichard, 1995; Hilke, 1989; McManus, 1987). This reduced compass of the research is detrimental on more than one account, the first being that it generally circumvents the art museum as well as the type of singular experience that a child might come across there. In this context, our presentation has a twofold purpose. On the one hand, the literature on the subject being somehow incomplete, we intend to open new grounds for research by analysing the reception of the artistic temporary exhibition "Tête à tête" (Musée du Louvre/ Centre Pompidou; 2006). On the other hand, we will confront the results obtained in the context of the art museum with the findings of the existing literature on social interaction and children's learning experience in science museums.
