Abstract

This paper outlines the framework and some conclusions of a study of urban change and planning in parts of Ile-de-France and London. In contrast to the current interest in these cities in metropolitan strategy and world city competition the paper focuses on the local level. It examines the relationships between socio-economic change and local policy responses in Islington and Wandsworth in London, and Issy-les-Moulineaux and Montreuil-sous-Bois in Ile-de-France, and highlights the reasons behind the different trajectories of local response to economic change as well as more recent similarities of approach and the challenges now facing these areas.
