Abstract

In this paper, we are interested in a special kind of "design oriented organizations" [A. Hatchuel, B.Weil, H. Le Masson (2002)] : the vertical network. More precisely, we aim at questionning through the competence perspective the special device that characterizes such an organization : the colocation of design activities. We therefore investigate the competence approach (N. Foss ; 1993) in order to know if it succeeds in taking into account the particular characteristics of the design activity. Highlighting the limits of the competence approach –and more precisely the problems associated to the motion of "distributed capabilities"- we then suggest to mobilize the notion of "competent social actor" introduced by A. Giddens (1987) : this later allows to define the actor's competence as a capacity to understand and to position into a world under construction better than the result of a given world's learning process.
