Abstract

Le décor sculpté des édifices publics a, de manière générale, moins retenu l'attention des historiens d'art que le décor peint. Dans le cas des établissements d'enseignement supérieur parisiens, il permet d'éclairer divers aspects des rapports entre institution et architecture. Il constitue également un des aspects de la définition identitaire des communautés. Toutefois, ces interprétations ethnologiques ou sémiologiques doivent être tempérées par la prise en compte des relations complexes qui existent entre universitaires, artistes et représentants de l'administration des beaux-arts.
