Digital Financial Systems and How They Enhance Financial Institutions’ Growth Trajectory

Digital financial technology also plays a crucial role in community banks' competitiveness, but evidence on region-specific gains remains limited. In this paper, we examined how the digitisation of financial systems affects the operational efficiency, outreach, and growth of community banks in Growth States (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). It is a quantitative, cross-sectional, explanatory design that used questionnaires completed by 384 banking professionals across 48 banking institutions, along with 3 years of financial indicators. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, partial least-squares structural equation modelling and mediation analyses with 5,000 bootstrap resamples were used to analyse the data. The results showed that it contributed significantly to operational efficiency (β = 0.666), customer reach (β = 0.621), and institutional growth (β = 0.270), and accounted for 62.8% of the variance in growth. The large indirect effects of efficiency (0.244) and customer reach (0.171) indicated complementary partial mediation. Cybersecurity, implementation costs, and the incompatibility of legacy systems were the major obstacles, and metropolitan and larger banks achieved better results than rural and smaller banks.
