Abstract

The primary purpose of The Conference of Parties (COP) is to facilitate international cooperation in addressing climate change and to assess progress toward achieving the goals set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Another key objective is raising awareness and mobilizing action among influential stakeholders, mostly governments, and various for-profit and non-profit organizations. While COP's immediate impact primarily affects governments, policymakers, think-tanks, and businesses, its relevant stakeholders are also the consumers and society at large, although COP's impact on them may not always be as obvious. This chapter discusses the impact of international organizations like COP on individual consumers' sustainability awareness. It illustrates how the COP conference could indirectly enhance awareness among the consumers, including those not directly participating, which in turn might lead to attitudinal or even behavioral changes, fostering a cultural shift within the host country and beyond. The chapter focuses on environmental perceptions of consumers and investigates their sustainable attitudes and motivations surrounding the COP28 event held in 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. © 2027 selection and editorial matter, Ivana Beveridge; individual chapters, the contributors.
