Research challenges in economics on Agriculture, Food and Planet boundaries: cross visions of USDA-ERS and INRAE-EcoSocio

Abstract

The research division Economics and Social Sciences of INRAE (EcoSocio) gathers 150 researchers and 110 engineers and administrative staff, distributed in 18 research units, most of them shared with universities, CNRS and agricultural universities. It aims at understanding the economic and social functioning and evolution of agriculture, agribusiness and agro industries, food, and rural areas, in close connection with global and local environmental issues, in order to inform public debates and public and private decisions. The presentation focuses on the challenges of the world food system facing the planet bounderies and the stresses and disasters that already affect agriculture, forestry and carbon sinks. It analyses the capacity of the European Green Deal (20219) to handle these challenges and details how the EcoSocio research agenda tackles some of the main trade offs between social and environmental conflicting objectives.
