Abstract

This study examines whether pillar-skewed ESG engagement undermines supply chain stability and tests the moderating roles of ESG controversy, market uncertainty, and slack resources. Using panel data on firms in the French SBF120 index from 2014 to 2024, we find that ESG disparity is positively associated with supply chain instability. This effect is concentrated on the demand side. Market uncertainty and slack resources weaken the positive association between ESG disparity and supply chain instability, whereas ESG controversy does not significantly moderate this relationship. Overall, ESG disparity emerges as a source of vulnerability, whose destabilizing effect depends on contextual conditions.
