Diffuse or Focus? The Effect of ESG Disparity on Green Innovation

Abstract

This study examines whether pillar-skewed ESG engagement affects firms' green innovation and tests the moderating roles of analyst attention, market uncertainty, and slack resources. Using panel data on SBF 120 firms in France from 2014 to 2024, we find that ESG disparity is negatively associated with green innovation. The negative association is attenuated when analyst attention increases and when market uncertainty is higher, whereas the moderating effect of slack resources is not statistically significant. After accounting for potential endogeneity, the relationship remains consistent, and additional robustness analyses corroborate the main findings, including the attenuating roles of stronger external monitoring and higher uncertainty.
