Abstract

Quand Raymond Picquot publie Je suis libraire aux éditions du Conquistador en 1955, cela fait déjà 32 années qu'il est libraire. Fondée en 1923, rue des Piliers-de-Tutelle à Bordeaux, ayant déménagé ensuite au 5 place Gambetta à partir de 1928, la librairie éponyme était une entreprise familiale reconnue. Celle-ci concurrençait alors deux autres grandes librairies bordelaises, la librairie Féret, créée en 1812, et la librairie Mollat, grande enseigne encore en activité aujourd'hui, créée en 1896. À l'inverse de ces deux dernières, très réputées et à la santé économique plus solide comme en témoigne leur longévité, la librairie Picquot se voulait davantage régionaliste. Raymond Picquot devient ainsi éditeur de classiques bordelais. Il souligne, après-guerre, dans la presse locale, que « le commerce empiète sur l'intelligence et l'esprit », critiquant l'affaiblissement des esprits dans une vision maurassienne de la France..
