Ontology and The Real Economy

Abstract

The modern mainstream of economics is, at best, unclear in terms of conceptualising its object of study. Jonathan Levy, in The Real Economy (2025), identifies this issue and, through historical analysis, provides elements of a conception of the object of study of economics—the economy. The Cambridge Social Ontology project has similarly engaged with the impoverished state of the modern mainstream of economics. The paper contrasts these two approaches, arguing that an explicit engagement with ontology can serve to clarify a number of issues related to sustainably conceptualising the object of study of economics.
