Abstract

This article analyses the resilience strategies implemented by different types of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cameroon to cope with the constraints of their environment and ensure the continuity of their social mission. A qualitative study conducted among 12 MFIs, supplemented by a confirmatory survey, identifies two approaches. The passive approach, which aims to absorb the shock without major transformation, and the active approach, which involves structural transformation. Category 2 MFIs (see classification in Appendix 1) have deployed more strategies, suggesting that size and resources influence resilience capacity. This hybrid resilience (the coexistence and intertwining of formal and informal approaches within the strategies employed) provides a framework for analysis to strengthen the resilience of inclusive financial institutions in times of crisis.
