Sustainable purchasing practices in road freight transport: the case of the French programme FRET 21

Abstract

This contribution analyses the organisational and decision-making processes of purchasing sustainable transport. It provides a better understanding of the endogenous and exogenous incentives that drive companies to integrate sustainable development. The implementation of the voluntary programme FRET 21, favoured by shippers aware of environmental issues, allows us to conduct exploratory research by studying 10 cases to better understand their motivation. Our results suggest that their environmental approach derives essentially from internal dynamics. They also indicate that the supply chain department plays a leading role in making decisions regarding the purchasing of transport services.
