Abstract
Associative local currencies are powerful examples of the search for alternative management models. The associations behind them are, as a result, hybrid organizations subject to internal tensions, particularly regarding the project's identity, its governance, and the question of its performance. We explore these issues through a series of questions: regarding the underlying political project, the hybridization of financial and human resources, the relationship with local stakeholders, and multi-stakeholder governance. This analysis points to a path for the development of associative local currencies as commons. This analysis draws on the results of two questionnaire-based surveys conducted among all local currencies in France in 2019–2020 and in 2023, as well as on the observation and monitoring of these systems since their emergence.
