Managing climate challenges through eco-innovation: the role of board committees and institutional pressures

Abstract

Climate change presents substantial risks to both firms and society, yet we still know little about how exposure to these risks fuel eco-innovation. Based on an international sample of 24,929 observations over the period 2001-2021, we find a significant positive association between climate risk exposure—specifically physical, operational, and regulatory risks—and eco-innovation. These findings confirm the opportunity view, suggesting that climate change exposure serves not only as a risk factor but also as a driver of corporate innovation aimed at reducing environmental impacts. This positive effect if more likely in the presence of board-level sustainability, governance, and environmental management committees, as well as heightened coercive (institutional quality) and mimetic (product market competition) pressures. Overall, our findings are robust to endogeneity concerns and provide actionable insights for decisions makers and regulators.
