Abstract

At a time when mountain destinations must consider their adaptation and transition in response to environmental challenges, this paper examines the case of Les Karellis, a resort in the Savoie region founded in 1975 on a cooperative and associative model rooted in the social tourism movement. Drawing on a critical perspective through the lens of heritage and combining historical and ethnographic approaches to study the material, organisational, and symbolic legacies of the site, the article shows how landscape, social values, and collective governance shape the tourist experience. It also highlights current tensions related to institutional changes, tourism practices, and climate change.
