Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in healthcare organizations, yet its organizational effects are still predominantly examined through adoption and acceptance perspectives. This research proposes a shift towards a post-adoptive perspective by focusing on the process of AI appropriation in professional practices. Drawing on a comparative qualitative study conducted in two French healthcare institutions, this research examines the appropriation of an AI-based sound monitoring system. The findings reveal a temporally structured appropriation process, characterized by continuous adjustments, organizational regulation, and persistent tensions. The study shows that AI appropriation unfolds within an ambivalent socio-technical dynamic, conceptualized as constructive ambivalence, which is enabled by organizational conditions that reconcile ethical vigilance with the transformation of professional practices. Finally, the findings highlight the central role of local management in mediating uses and regulating tensions associated with the integration of AI in healthcare settings.
