Abstract

This summary report analyzes the critical budgetary situation of New Caledonia, examining its unique financial ties with mainland France within the context of a global crisis. The author details the presentations from the symposium that led to this work, addressing local taxation, the territory's financial autonomy, and the alarming weight of social spending that threatens the balance of public accounts. The author emphasizes that dependence on nickel and massive state funding are major issues, particularly as decisive electoral milestones approach for the archipelago's institutional future. Rather than offering ready-made solutions, the text explores avenues for reflection on fiscal modernization and public spending control, drawing on international comparisons with Japan and Australia. Ultimately, it calls for urgent awareness regarding an exhausted economic model that requires deep structural reform to ensure its long-term viability.
