Abstract

This volume is the result of an international, multidisciplinary conference held at the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University of Rennes on 9 and 10 November 2023 as part of the international research network PHEDRA (Towards a European History of Business Law). It is the result of a reflection on the consequences of global economic changes which, without calling the market economy into question, challenge the spirit of free trade and the competitive economy, particularly through the resurgence of protectionism and the growing intervention of states in economic affairs. By exploring a wide range of local, national and international experiences spanning from the medieval period to the present day, the contributions brought together in this volume provide further insight into the slow process of developing business law at the European level and beyond. They offer new insights into the development of the law governing economic activities, suggesting that its history remains largely to be written, particularly through the lens of the phenomenon of competition.
