Abstract

Meta-organizations – organizations with other organizations as members – are integral to contemporary societies. They organize their member organizations, but also markets, public policies, industries, civil society organizations. From well-known organizations like the United Nations (UN) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to lesser-known industry associations or local multi-stakeholder groups, meta-organizations are crucial to structure social interactions among organizations. They can both enable and prevent societal transformations. In order to understand contemporary society, it is essential to understand meta-organizations, why they are created, how they work, and how they influence their members and society at large. In this chapter, we describe the motivations for this book and introduce the theory of meta-organizations.
