Abstract

This article examines resistance to land grabbing through incremental dynamics in the Brazilian Amazon. It draws on qualitative data (25 semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations) and quantitative and institutional data. It mobilizes an institutionalist framework of countermovements to understand how strategies for formalizing collective rights to land enable a degree of resistance to land grabbing. However, the categories of collective formalization based on statization, and the long trend towards setting these collective rights in competition with the formalization of individual rights, represent a challenge for countermovements in Santarém (Pará).
