Abstract

This paper sheds light on the theoretical underpinnings of the concepts of land grabbing and land reform. We read from the angle of modalites of allocation key concepts of academic and prescriptive debates through the standard and non-standard paradigms in economics. We identify the contours of a Contractual Approach to Institutional Economics (ACI) and situate it on Favereau's orientation table. ACI does not recognize a plurality of allocation modes thus locking in the debates. In Institutionalist Political Economy (EPI), we then identify avenues for overcoming the limits of ideal-typical agrarian reform and land grabbing.
