Abstract

This document analyzes the economic sustainability of New Caledonia by examining how the reduction of financial transfers from the French State influences its development trajectory. The author utilizes the adjusted net savings (or genuine savings) indicator to demonstrate that, despite historical resilience linked to the rise of the metallurgical industry, the economy remains structurally vulnerable. The study highlights that the territory's wealth relies heavily on nickel mining, a non-renewable resource whose extraction generates significant environmental costs. In conclusion, the text suggests that maintaining viable growth without mainland aid requires increased economic diversification and a better valuation of New Caledonia's intangible capital.
