Abstract

This text analyzes the economic challenges facing New Caledonia following the referendums on its political status. Although the archipelago boasts a high standard of living and significant social progress, its historical dependence on the nickel sector and financial transfers from mainland France weakens its future stability. The author highlights the need to find new drivers of growth, such as tourism, the enhancement of natural and cultural heritage, or foreign investment, to diversify an economy vulnerable to external shocks. The discussion also addresses major structural choices regarding monetary policy, fiscal autonomy, and sustainable resource management. In short, the territory is at a decisive turning point that requires a rethinking of its development model to ensure autonomous prosperity.
