Abstract

This document presents the opening speech by Gaël Lagadec at a university symposium held in September 2017 regarding the economic future of New Caledonia. The author emphasizes the importance of combining scientific research with the visions of political decision-makers to better understand the territory's challenges as the decolonization referendums approach. The text highlights the risks associated with institutional instability and the need to diversify an economy that remains overly dependent on nickel and state aid. Despite significant legal autonomy, the region must address competitiveness and growth issues within a climate of uncertainty. Finally, the speech thanks the institutional and academic partners involved in this reflection on the post-Nouméa Accord transition.
