Abstract

This study analyzes the economic development models of island states, focusing particularly on New Caledonia and its dependence on France. The author demonstrates that non-sovereign territories often maintain a higher standard of living thanks to financial transfers and political ties with their respective metropoles. The text highlights the "scissors effect" (effet ciseau), where imports grow much faster than exports, requiring external income such as tourism, public aid, or migrant remittances. Contrary to popular belief, regional integration in the Pacific remains weak, as these economies are structurally oriented toward distant external partners. Finally, the article underlines the economic uncertainty linked to potential independence, suggesting that New Caledonian prosperity relies more on its bilateral relations than on regional self-sufficiency.
