Abstract

This article analyzes the characteristics and roles of the social networks maintained by expatriates outside the borders of the host country. A temporal processual approach, using both quantitative and qualitative methods, makes it possible to identify five types of distant networks that fulfill specific functions and are activated, put on hold, or reactivated during different phases of the expatriation experience. Our findings highlight the key role of distant networks, which provide various forms of support upon arrival, throughout the stay during local social integration, and at the end of the assignment when preparing for repatriation and post-expatriation career development. The study also underscores the decisive influence of the spouse in the formation, development, and maintenance of distant networks.
