Human Resource Management in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

Abstract

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are two developing countries in the South Asia. Bangladesh is located in the South East Asia of the South Asian sub-continent, whereas Sri Lanka is an island located in the Indian Ocean on the seaways between the East and West. Both countries have similar historical and cultural roots due to the colonial past and dependence on foreign direct investment (FDI) for economic development. This chapter is devoted to discuss human resource management (HRM) in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The term HRM is referred to incorporate main systems for recruitment and selection, performance management, rewards management and human resource development (HRD), and concerned with the management of all levels of personnel in the organizational hierarchy. This chapter contains five main sections. The next section presents an introduction to the country contexts of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This will be followed by the HRM practices in state sector. Section Four presents HRM practices in the private sector, including multinational companies (MNCs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Section Five is devoted to discuss the strategic focus of HRM in the two countries.
