Abstract

The cut rose sector is a major component of Kenya's integration into the global economy. This intensive greenhouse production, born of foreign capital investment, is trying to adapt to recent changes in the global economy and to take advantage of the new opportunities offered by this market. The productive changes underway primarily concern the diversification of varieties and the upmarket production of the Kenyan cluster. They also reveal new interactions between producers and breeders. In addition, this export-based production model must now face new challenges in connection with the affirmation, within the main importing countries, of a capitalism of attention focused on ethical and environmental issues. This context is prompting Kenyan producers to reduce their historical dependence on Europe, and in particular the Netherlands, by focusing on new marketing methods and diversifying their commercial outlets.
