Abstract

This research proposes an interdisciplinary framework to address the issue of overtourism in mountain regions, using Val Gardena in the Dolomites as a case study. It is proposed that the excessive concentration of visitors could be mitigated by promoting lesser-known points of interest through the principles of slow tourism. Our framework is based on a four-phase structure that integrates geographic data, digital footprints, and insights from local stakeholders to map the territory. Through an analysis operating at both a macro-regional and micro-individualPOI level, the carrying capacity of well-known and lesser-known locations can be evaluated to prevent environmental degradation. The ultimate goal is the development of recommender systems that prioritize ecological sustainability over algorithmic popularity, helping tourism organizations redistribute flows in a more balanced manner.
