Do Immersive Technologies Add Value to the Museum Visitor Experience?

Abstract

The authors explore the impact of immersive information communication technologies (ICTs) on the experience of museum visitors. These technologies (infrared helmets, 3D imaging, and image projection) represent a new way of presenting an exhibition, one that immerses the visitor in a different world, time or place. The authors use Holbrook's concept of experiential value to examine the impact of immersive ICTs on the museum experience. The study was carried out at France's Paleosite, an interactive centre dedicated to prehistory. It comprised a qualitative survey of 21 semi-structured interviews and analysis of written comments by visitors to the site. The results provide some perspectives on the effects of immersive ICTs on the experience of museum visitors.
