Abstract

The Sahel is now one of the world's main epicenters of violent extremism, at the intersection of state collapse, ideological manipulation, and social despair. This work offers a clear-eyed analysis of jihadist dynamics in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, as well as their expansion toward the coastal countries of West Africa. It shows how extremist propaganda has emerged as a tool of political conquest, while states—constrained by ineffective security communication—struggle to maintain public trust. By combining the political economy of conflict, public communication, and resilience analysis, the author highlights the concrete mechanisms through which armed groups establish territorial control, as well as the often-overlooked institutional responsibilities. The study identifies credible levers of resilience and calls for an urgent rethinking of stabilization strategies in the Sahel.
