Abstract

The rediscovered manuscript of De l'impôt by Mirabeau and Jakob Mauvillon, written in 1790-1, helps revisit Mirabeau's economic ideas and revelas that he was a Physiocrat, an adept follower of Quesnay's and Turgot's ideas. Mirabeau conducts a dual project in economics: on the one hand he defends the adoption of a single tax on the net revenue of land in France and in Europe; on the other hand, he replies to Arthur Young's and Adam Smith's criticism of physiocrats. Physiocratic ideas were still surviving in 1790-1, and were not necessarily considered opposed to those of Smith.
