Abstract

Faced with the consolidation of global value chains (GVCs) and market volatility, alternative organizations are prioritizing the political goal of decommodifying essential goods and services. They adopt plural value logics and multi-scalar strategies for organizing production, distribution, and consumption within alternative value chains. Socioecological cooperation and disintermediation act as levers for emancipation. An inter-organizational lens highlights counter-hegemonic practices, as shown in the case of renewable energy cooperatives. Despite their ambitions, these cooperatives often navigate entanglements with market systems. We define these 'nodes' as moments of intersection between alternative and commodified chains, requiring strategic decisions. Their analysis reveals the principles of alternative value chains and how organizing in networks can scale decommodification efforts.
