Exploring Upstream Supply Chain Vulnerabilities through a Multi-Criteria Framework

Abstract

This paper explores the vulnerability of upstream supply chains (SCs) through the development and application of a multi-criteria assessment grid. Anchored in the core dimensions of SC vulnerability exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity we co-constructed a framework within an action research project in collaboration with a major French automotive manufacturer. Drawing from both academic literature and industry practices, our grid enables the identification and prioritization of structural vulnerability across complex supply networks. The methodology is applied to two real-world cases involving battery SCs. The findings reveal recurring patterns of exposure and sensitivity, particularly in relation to supplier concentration, regulatory pressure, and technological rigidity. The results illustrate how such a framework can support more, anticipatory, and resilient SC decision-making.
